January 14 - High School
What we’re doing this week:
We were made to walk with God; and while it can be easy to reduce our spiritual journey to habits, rituals, and head knowledge, all of those things are the means to understanding the God who loves us and developing our relationship with Him! As we begin 2024, we will explore what it means to walk with God each and every day. Each of the teachings during this series will involve a component of practicing spending time with God in the session space!
When someone says, “I love God”, what exactly does that mean? Is it a feeling that we can work hard to conjure up? Or is it something deeper? As we begin 2024, we are going to look at what it means to love God and we can make room for the Holy Spirit to grow our affection for Him.
Bottom Line: When you give God your attention, He will win over your affection.
Scripture: Psalm 63:1-5
Small Group Discussion:
Small Group time follows an interactive flow of questions that builds on each other! We’d encourage you to follow the flow of questions in numerical order tonight!
Which of the attributes of God that were mentioned during tonight’s practice stuck out to you?
What are the biggest obstacles to giving God your attention? Rank these 1-4 (1 being the biggest obstacle, 4 being the least problematic obstacle in your life)
The busyness of life.
The distractions of technology.
Not knowing where to start
Little to no desire to really get to know God
Something else?
Based on how you ranked obstacles in the last question, what can you do to lessen the impact of that obstacle?
This week’s challenge is to get to know an attribute of God… how do we want to go about this as a group before we check in with each other next week?
Reading Scripture while asking “What does this teach me about God’s character?” and reporting back what we discovered
Researching “Attributes of God” and digging into one of the ones that interest us and reporting back
Another idea from the group or the leader
Do you want to know and love God more this year? Let’s pray for each other that we can give God our attention and affection. **Consider pairing students up to pray for each other**
