October 1 - High School
What we’re learning this week:
You can know something with your brain without continuously taking the time to get to know it. It’s the same with the Holy Spirit; while our students might kind of, sort of, understand who the Holy Spirit is, we believe that we are called to continuously get to know Him. During this series, we will get to know who He is and explore what it looks like to spend time with Him.
As we conclude our intro series for the year, we will look at the difference between knowing God as an observer and knowing Him as His child. Student’s will be reminded that the relationship that God has made possible with us is one of security, intimacy, dependence, and gratitude. Students who have been keeping God at a distance will be challenged to claim their identity as children of God!
Bottom Line: You were made to know God as a child, not just an observer
Scripture: Romans 8:14-17
Small Group Discussion
Work through some of these small group questions, invite the group to share prayer requests, and then have someone pray to close your time.
Series Key Verse: Galatians 5:25 – Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
Tonight we went over three qualities of someone who has a relationship with God as His child: 1) A child is secure in their identity as a child. 2) A child communicates with their father. 3) A child knows what they have been given.
Of these three qualities, which one do you want to ask the Holy Spirit to help you remember this week and why?
Has there been a time in your life when you just observed God instead of being in a relationship with Him as a child? What was the difference?
In your own words, what does it mean to have a relationship with God as your heavenly father?
Recap the last three weeks: In week 1 we learned that the Holy Spirit brings life out of chaos; week 2 we learned that the work of the spirit can be impacted by legalism or sinful nature; tonight we learned that the Holy Spirit transforms our hearts to see God, not as an observer, but as His child.
What is one thing you want to remember from this series?
What do you need to adjust in your everyday life to create space for the Holy Spirit to move?
