What we’re doing this week:

As we continue our Bad Role Models series, we are going to look at the ways the religious leader mistreated a woman who they caught in adultery. The woman caught in sin was invited to repent of her sins by embracing the mercy of Jesus and the religious leaders were invited to repent by recognizing their own sin. In this powerful story, we are reminded that Jesus’ mercy transforms us to living the life we are called to live and pointing others to Jesus instead of counting them out on receiving the mercy Jesus desires to give them.

Bottom Line: The mercy of Jesus changes everything.
Scripture: John 8:1-11, Mark 1:15

Small Group Time:

Work through the questions below. Take note of any follow up conversations that may need to be had on a more one on one basis. To close, pray for each other (there is a prayer request prompt on question #5)

  • Which of the following two statements more closely aligns with this season of your life?

    • Sometimes I feel like a fraud from hiding the sin and temptation in my life.

    • I often feel frustrated or even judgmental towards those who are living in sin.

  • Jesus invited the woman caught in adultery to repent by showing her his mercy...

    • What helps you remember the mercy that Jesus has shown you?

    • Is there somebody in your life who reminds you of Jesus’ mercy?

  • Jesus invited the religious leaders to repent by showing them their sins…

    • Why do you think religious people tend to judge the ways other people live?

    • What do you think would help you see someone who is in sin with eyes of mercy instead of judgment?

  • *Close your eyes* When you reflect on this conversation, take a moment and consider what Jesus may be inviting you to…

    • Is he inviting you to leave behind the shame you’re carrying from past mistakes?

    • Is he inviting you to leave behind the sinful habits or practices you’ve slowly allowed to be a part of your life?

    • Is he inviting you to leave behind half-hearted loyalty to him?

    • Is he inviting you to leave behind your harsh attitude towards those who do not know him?

    • Is he inviting you to embrace his mercy for you and for others?

  • Spend some time in prayer talking to God about what he’s inviting you to do.
