February 23 - High School

What we’re learning this week:

There are questions of the mind like “How can I know ____” and then there are questions of the heart. This week, we will have an honest conversation about an overarching question of the heart: Why does God allow this? Whether it be pain, hurt, anxiety, or death, looking at Job’s story will help us see that while God allows it, He also has felt it, and has a master plan to redeem it.

Bottom Line:  God allows it. God feels it. God has plans to redeem it.
Scripture: The Book of Job, Hebrews 4:15, Romans 8:28

Small Group Time:

As you lead this discussion about the questions of the heart, make sure you approach this with sensitivity and soul! You may have students who are dealing with big questions RIGHT NOW! This conversation gets real and expansive and lands with a great practical convo about how your small group can help each other through hard times! Lean in!

  1. Have you ever wrestled with what you would call a “question of the heart”? (More of a deeper question of God that was prompted by your personal pain) what were they?

  2. Is there something that has helped you place your trust in God when you are experiencing pain, hurt, anxiety, or suffering? Share with the group.

  3. In Job’s story, most of the people in his circle pushed him towards abandoning his faith or embracing shame – on a scale of 1-5 (1=terrible 5=amazing) how would you rate your inner circle’s ability to help you hold strong to faith in the midst of suffering? Explain

  4. What characteristic of God can you commit yourself to getting to know NOW so you can call it to mind when the big heart questions arise?

  5. What would make our small group a safer place to bring up the difficult things we’re all going through?

Next week preview:

Next week we conclude our series with a discussion night about God’s timing. Sometimes God’s timing seems painfully out of sync with our timing– we will explore a popular story of Jesus and process feelings of worry and jealousy that often creep up when we witness other people experiencing the blessings that we are praying for.
