What we’re learning this week:

This week’s teaching looks at James 3:7–12, where James shows us that our words have great power. They can build people up or tear them down. James says no human being can tame the tongue, and that praise and cursing should not come out of the same mouth. What comes out of our mouths shows what is in our hearts, and only Jesus can change our hearts so our words can speak life.

Bottom Line: Your words reveal your heart.
Scripture: James 3:7–12

Small Group Discussion:

Use this time to help students see that Jesus meets them in their own “ordinary” (school, sports, home, etc.) and is asking them for their next yes too. Discuss 1-3 questions and end by sharing prayer requests and praying together

  1. Chris said that, like a superhero, every one of us has great power because of our words. Can you think of a time when someone’s words (good or bad) stuck with you for a long time? Why do you think words have that kind of power?

  2. James points out that the same mouth can praise God and tear down people who are made in God’s image. Why do you think it’s so easy to sing worship songs on Wednesday night and say something hurtful about someone the next day?

  3. Chris said we can’t tame our tongues on our own, but Jesus can change our hearts, and that changes our words too. What do you think is the difference between just trying harder to watch what you say and letting Jesus change your heart?
