October 20 - High School
What we’re learning this week:
As we begin our series about relationships and sexuality, we will look at the story of Joseph in the Old Testament. Joseph had hundreds of reasons to go his own way and sin against God. In walking through Joseph's background and the cultural norms of his day, students will be asked to consider the many reasons why they would have to go their own way. Students will be compelled to begin this series with a commitment to trust God and align themselves with His ways just like Joseph did.
Bottom Line: The one reason to trust God is worth more than the hundreds of reasons to do your own thing.
Scripture: Genesis 39:6-10; Matthew 13:45-46
Small Group Time:
As we dive into our sexuality and relationships series, this week’s small group discussion sets the tone for the remainder of this series! These may be the more vulnerable questions that we have had – lean into it and lead with grace and listening; your group will follow!
If you were honest, what would you say are your most common reasons for trying to live your own way?
Which of the cultural norms that Luke mentioned tonight do you feel most strongly in your life? Are there any other ones related to sexuality and relationships that you feel are very obvious in your world?
When was a time in your life when you felt powerfully that following God was worth it? Share with the group!
Are there any changes you feel like you need to make to your life based on the teaching or the scripture we read?
What song or words stuck out to you during our time of worship tonight?
Next week preview:
When it comes to submitting to God’s plans for our lives, it’s very normal for people to assume that God only cares about our spiritual lives. During this teaching, students will be reminded that they are made in God’s image, body and soul. Since God cares about their whole person, they are invited to place their entire life under His care.
