What we’re learning this week:
Jesus laid out some pretty difficult guidelines for being his disciple: denying yourself, carrying a cross, losing your life. Tonight’s teaching will cover why Jesus would ask so much from us and how it really is more than we could ask for.
Bottom Line: Surrender leads to more than you can imagine
Scripture: Matthew 16:24-27
Small Group Time:
The teaching tonight had a lot to do with surrender – letting go of what we’re unwilling to let go of. Be sensitive to the fact that every person is hanging on to something. Also don’t forget to PLAN YOUR POTLUCK FOR NEXT WEEK (appetizers, drinks, desserts), we’ll provide the pizza!
Which way do you lean? The first person who adds a little bit of Jesus, or the one who wants to look good?
Have them raise their hands
In your opinion, what would it take for someone to think you’re a Christian at school? What would you have to say? How would you have to act? -- Is that any different than “being a good person”?
What are specific things that Jesus asked for his disciples to do that don’t add up to today’s culture?
What are some ways that we can practice surrender in our lives?
What things are you still hanging on to? (Use this time to be vulnerable with your students).
Next week preview:
Next week is a dinner night/discussion night focused solely on fellowship. We will eat together and talk about what it means to be in fellowship with each other as the church and how we were created both for relationship with God and with community.
