Why do people read the Bible? Some people read the Bible out of religious duty, while others read the Bible because their parents or authority figures have told them to. Some read the Bible to intensely study the history of Israel and claims of Christ and some people have no clue why they read their Bible. It’s difficult to stick to the habit of reading the Bible when we do not have a clear “why” to reading the Bible. Tonight, we will highlight that the entire Bible anticipates, highlights, and builds its’ foundation on Jesus and that the best “Why” for understanding the Bible is to get to know Jesus and begin a relationship with Him.

As we conclude this series, we will look at a few of the last scenes of his life all the way to his passing. Right before Jacob dies, he takes time to bless his children and tell them of God’s goodness. In fact. This is the very thing that Jacob is honored for in the New Testament. Jacob’s blessing to his sons shows us that in the ups and downs of our journey, we will be imperfect, but we can tell the story of the perfect God.

As we continue the story of Jacob, we witness one of the most bizarre scenes in his whole story: When he wrestled with God. When we walk through the story, we will see what happens when this man encounters God: He is given a new identity and is changed forever; why? Because God chose weakness to allow Jacob to be victorious. In the same way, God became weak by dying on the cross to redefine us and change us forever.

During this next portion of Jacob’s life we find him on the run, fearful for his life and separate from the community. This is what sin does within our stories, it leads to division and separation within our relationships, both with people and God. When we feel like what we’ve done or what we’re going through has separated us from God’s presence, we need to turn our heads, look up, and remember that God is always with us.
